Your ancestors may have originated in Africa
The origins of man always fascinate humans. Hominid fossils and primitive implements found in the Cradle of Humankind suggest that we all have common ancestors.
Where was their birthplace?
Mankind’s ancestors possibly originated and lived in a cave in the The Cradle of Humankind. This UNESCO Heritage Site area has two significant cave complexes.
The most anthropologically significant
Sterkfontein Caves. Excavations by the University of the Witwatersrand yielded fossil evidence of occupation of the Magaliesburg area by some of the oldest hominids ever discovered. The caves are open daily from 9am - 5pm, with the last guided tour at 4pm. We suggest you wear closed shoes. We find that steps in and out of the caves are steep, footing damp and some roofs very low, which makes the tour unsuitable for the very young, aged, unfit or highly pregnant. The guided tour of the caves is a one-way route and people cannot turn back once they have entered. Visitors who don’t want to take the tour are allowed to walk around the site to see the diggings. Booking for tours is advisable as numbers are limited and tour busses stop here. Our overseas guests have generally considered the tour guides to be knowledgeable and helpful. The exhibition centre, restaurant and curio shop are also worth a visit.
Wonder Cave was discovered by people searching for bat guano for fertiliser. The cave complex is accessible only through the
Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve. Tickets are available as a combined ticket with a Reserve visit. The caves are extensive and well worth a visit if you are not bothered by bats. We suggest you allow sufficient time for a guided tour and ensure that you are wearing suitable footwear.
The Cradle area also has a cave adventure (spelonking) concern that teaches people to do rock climbing, abseil and enter secluded caves through narrow clefts. Wild Cave Adventures was featured on the Amazing Race TV series. Their adventure activities are professionally conducted but are not without danger. They are obviously unsuitable for the aged, pregnant, unfit or people with vertigo.
