Why choose a Lodges in Magalies as your base?
One answer is ‘peace of mind’. Guest houses featured on the Magalies Meander have to comply with the requirements of a quality assurance body like the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) or AA Travel. Annual quality assurance gradings are linked to the quality of furniture and linen, bathroom size and fittings, service hours and guest facilities. Amenities at guest houses are not shared with the owner’s family, as they are in B&B’s. This type of accommodation often offers the equivalent of hotel amenities. Each guest room must have its own bathroom with at least a shower, wash basin and toilet. A breakfast with hot and cold choices must be served and dinner must be available on-site or close by. Meal times are at the discretion of the host, but must comply with grading requirements.
On another level, many couples choose to stay in guest houses to reduce costs whilst enjoying a good standard of accommodation. For tourists, this has the added benefit that they are usually able to experience South African hospitality and benefit from their hosts’ local knowledge.
Guesthouses are all different
Guest houses vary in their number of rooms and guest facilities. They often offer a spa, conference facilities, wedding and function centres, romantic getaways and farm experiences. Many guest houses have their own unique character related to the past history of their premises. As can be expected from a rural area, Landhof on a dirt road near Breedts’ Nek as well as our Rose Well Spa on the R24 main road, are on former farms. Intriguingly, Die Ou Pastorie on the R560 in Skeerpoort was the church-owned home of a priest and serves real South African cuisine for dinner.
Access - tar or dirt road?
Vehicle access is also an important feature for many visitors. Some guest houses are on the R24 between Krugersdorp and Rustenburg, and do not require a 4x4 vehicle. Various guest houses on Magalies Meander routes T3, 4, 5 and 6 are only accessible on dirt roads. Various guest houses are perched on the mountain slopes or in valleys and have had to install some form of paved access drive that is suitable for access by sedan vehicles. Check this out if your car is low to the ground!
Lots of guest houses are waiting for your visit to the Magalies Meander. The choice of venue is yours!
