Steam Train

Ready to catch a steam train to Magaliesburg?

The Magaliesburg train is synonymous with day trips from Johannesburg to Magaliesburg. Steam trains have used the Johannesburg-Magaliesburg line since the period that Magaliesburg was the focal station for the pioneer Witwatersrand gold miners.

Magaliesburg Railway Station is a halt for passenger and cargo trains proceeding to Botswana and Zimbabwe, but the Magaliesburg train is purely for day trippers wanting to experience a steam train trip and pay a visit to the country village of Magaliesburg. There are two options

Where to eat on a steam train trip

Lots of passengers bring a picnic to eat on the train, but the only picnic area in the village is at the railway station. On the village main street it is easy to buy fast food from the Spar or a franchise outlet such as Chicken Lickin or Wimpy.

A popular lunch time alternative is the buffet lunch at R 100 for adults and R 50 for under 12's, which is presented at the Magaliesburg Country Hotel located next to the steam train halt.

Train times

The Magaliesburg steam train leaves from Johannesburg Station at 09;00 and arrives at the Magaliesburg hotel halt at 11:00. It leaves from the hotel halt at 15:00 and arrives at Johannesburg Station at 17:00.

The Magaliesburg steam train is a life experience that should be on every bucket list. It's a daytrip you and your children will remember, so don’t miss out!
